despite his artist name and his trademark sound, steve murphy does not come from chicago, but from mira, a little town on the suburban area of venice. steve has been djing since 2001, and in the past years has been rocking almost every club in his region. he is serious and professional behind the decks: playing only with vinyl, he blends electro and house, techno and new wave, acid madness and pop appeal. steve has produced together with die roh an album (-the chasm-) and one e.p (-windy city-) on chiwax, and a solo 10- (-planet earth-) on rawax, these records have quickly gone out of stock and that have been acclaimed by the lovers of the classic warehouse sounds. in 2012 he has started the riviera project and has founded the muscle records label, together with lucretio, dj octopus, caio, madì grein and chevel. the label is a facility to spread what has been called -the sound of brenta-: a raw, nasty, machines powered clash of house and techno. in 2012 he also released -the dove ultimatum- on vae victis records, under the moniker of durant: an unfriendly 12- of distorted electro and funky acid beats produced with die roh and lucretio.

at 21 years old, mathis ruffing has already managed to craft a signature sound, elegant and mature with a focus on melody and texture. rewardingly diverse, the ep touches on several genres and influences, ranging from cosmic to earthy dancefloor cuts, acid, grime, proper electro, idm and ambient. the common thread on this record is the search for balance between heartfelt melodies on one hand and on the other a form of immediacy, raw and almost industrial. ruffing has no trouble finding this balance and adding five terrific tracks to the banlieue catalogue.

lobster theremin finally welcome back one of the original lt fam, with imre kiss taking the reigns for a full on raw-power white label. with two lucid and hazy releases for lt in his wake, plus an excellent contribution to the proto sites catalogue, imre finally returns with a rough and overdriven in-the-dance ep of floor-crushing fire.

fuckthegovernment.ltd, a.k.a. f.t.g (alfredo trastulli) and music box head honcho, marco riff, return to the skylax fold in 2016 with a cache of house nuggets for our listening pleasure. their last venture on skylax saw f.t.g collaborate with a bunch of his friends, resulting in some of the best tracks we’d heard all year, including the unforgettable fuckthegovernment theme. their tracks have been celebrated and hailed by some of the best djs in the game, names such as derrick may, ricardo villalobos, raresh, and dj harvey. the bar set by the first record remains sky high, and somehow, these two manage to raise the bar even higher. it may be the biggest cliche going when talking about an album, but the duo certainly do take us on a journey, through the past and present of house music. it’s a record not too dissimilar in tone to paranoid london’s from a few years back, but f.t.g and marco strip things back even further than those guys did, in our opinion, the sound is more raw with less frills, and no track names to predispose feelings in the listener either. this eight track project is cohesive and elaborate, with movements through sounds both acid and jazzy, minimal and maximal. it explores sounds that came to prominence in famous house locales such as detroit and chicago over in the u.s., but the underground european influence is definitely present, from paris to berlin, and of course f.t.g and marco’s home of italy. with this album, these guys add to the underground sound that has cultivated in the city of perugia for years now, a place that has seen the likes of simoncino and nicholas hone their craft.don’t miss out on a piece of skylax history

for the first release on raw m.t.’s jinn records imprint, japanese producer yoshinori hayashi continues his left-field electronic experiments debuted last year on going good with a visually-evocative voyage through ambiguous collages of distorted broken-beat tropes and far-east soundscapes. on the flip, dj sotofett provides a stunning 12 min-long oriental reverie to get things even deeper.

opening track the promise is a 909-riddled voyage, moving through raw grooves and melancholic, filtered synth work. cosmic chords and a strong bassline drives the offering steadily into moody club music territory while, on the ep flip, dubbed out zora on holds a probing melody that whips against rolling pads and restrained vocals. nostalgic and effervescent, undertone closes the release beautifully, with clean keys and organic, twinkling percussion making for perfect for all day and night listening.
